Lititz recCenter Breaks Ground On New Swimming Pool

The Lititz recCenter Board of Directors has officially launched their expansion project for a new indoor pool to be constructed at the facility’s location behind Warwick High School. A groundbreaking reception to announce the start of the project and recognize the many community businesses, organizations, and individuals providing contributions to support the $3 million project took place on Tuesday, July 20.
Current recCenter facilities were built in 1989 in an expansion move from the former recreation center building located at the entrance of Lititz Springs Park. In 2007 the Lititz recCenter completed a facilities overhaul and small expansion. Record membership and all-time high levels of participation in recCenter programs spurred another expansion in the fitness center area in January of this year. Meanwhile, the existing 21-year-old indoor pool has seen no significant change other than an upgraded filtration system and improved lighting.
“Our pool is the second-largest indoor pool in the county and we have stretched the multiple use capacity for this pool to the limit. With more than 1,300 visitors to the pool every week, there just are not enough hours in one day to accommodate all the uses we need to in this pool,” remarked Executive Director Karen Mailen. “We are very excited to create an aquatics center with two pools that will compliment each other so well.”
The pool expansion project at the Lititz recCenter will result in two pools used simultaneously. The existing pool will remain a competitive and recreational lap-swimming pool that also will accommodate special programs such as canoeing, kayaking, and scuba along with practice sessions and competitions hosted for the Warwick School District, Manheim Central and Five Star Swim Teams.
In contrast, the new indoor swimming pool will be a zero-entry pool with a gradual beach-like entrance, warmer water, and dedicated shallow splash zone with fountains and sprayers and a water slide. The opposite end of the new indoor swimming pool will feature four lap-lanes with an overall depth of just 4 to 5 feet.
“Accommodating special events in the competition pool will no longer mean that we have to close our aquatics area entirely. The pool expansion project is going to benefit every one of our aquatics programs and open the door for a variety of new programs,” says Mailen.
Expansion plans also include the addition of two new adult locker rooms, a poolside multi-purpose room for programs and private rentals, and three new handicapped accessible family changing and shower areas, all adjacent to the new pool area.
Lititz recCenter Board Member Mike Mitchell is chairing the fundraising for the campaign and committed the first pledge to support the project. “The demands and expectations for quality family recreation are here. I think the recCenter is responding with a responsible plan for stewardship and growth,” says Mitchell.
Contributions for the project have also been committed by nearly 100 local families and individuals and dozens of local businesses and organizations. “The Lititz community is showing their generosity and their interest in maintaining access to the best recreation opportunities to support the wonderful quality of life that residents in this region enjoy,” stated Karen Mailen. “We are very appreciative to have their support.”
Construction is expected to be complete within 9 to 12 months, making the new swimming pool ready for in spring 2011, well ahead of the 2011 fall competitive swimming season.
