The Denver-Ephrata Area Rotary Club is pleased to recognize four local senior high school students as their 2015 Rotary Youth Leadership Award recipients. The four students named received scholarships to attend Messiah College during the summer of 2015 for leadership training. The Rotary Youth Leadership Award training emphasizes leadership, citizenship, and personal growth. The program was established in 1959 by a Rotary Club in Australia and has become an elite experience for selected high school students worldwide. Locally, 130 high school students from Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry and York Counties attended RYLA at Messiah College during the summer of 2015.

Recently, the recipients presented information about their experiences to the Denver-Ephrata Area Rotary Club. “I have become much more open minded as a result of my RYLA experience,” reported Emily Heisler, a senior at Cocalico High School. “I have gained respect for other people and their opinions, even when they differ from mine.” “I too have learned to be more open minded,” agreed Peter Ehrhart a senior at Ephrata High School. “The experience showed me how to lead groups regardless of the differences of opinions members of the group may have.”

“RYLA was the most amazing experience of my life!” said Andrew Husson a senior at Ephrata High School.  Husson further stated that, “the experience motivated me to become more active in my community.” Cocalico senior Brianna Titi agreed and added that “the friendships we developed were hard to leave. On the last day we all joined hands in a huge circle as we felt much stronger and more powerful because we were there to support one another.  It was hard knowing it was our last moment together but we all squeezed hands and we knew we had made some lasting friendships.”
