Hinkletown Mennonite School’s Benefit Auction Planned

Hinkletown Mennonite School’s (HMS) HinkleFEST & Benefit Auction includes fun and interest for the whole family throughout the event’s two days! HinkleFEST and Auction 2015 will be held rain or shine on Friday, October 9 and Saturday, October 10 at the HMS campus. New this year is a Chicken Chase/Family Fun Run on Friday, October 9 at 4:00 p.m. Children and adults can register to run the cross-country track at HMS. Kids will run one, two, or three laps according to their age, led around the track by the HMS Chicken. Students will enjoy guessing which teacher will be costumed as the HMS chicken for the race! Parents can choose to run with their children and younger children are welcome. Pre-registration for a cost is available at www.hmsk8.org/Auction or register on race day. Awards will go to top runners in addition to a prize for all participants.

Kids will also enjoy the movie “Chicken Run” on Friday at 6:30 p.m. On Saturday, kids activities include games, crafts and the ever-popular Bounce House as well as new options like Barrel Train rides from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The core of the event is the benefit auction, held Friday evening from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and continuing on Saturday beginning at 9:00 a.m. (bidder registration opens at 8:00 a.m.). Auctioneers Michael J. Martin and John Rutt of Martin & Rutt Auctioneers will be selling a broad range of items for everyone. Michael J. Martin and his wife Cheryl are former HMS parents and bring energy and enthusiasm to the auction.

New this year, Friday night’s auction will feature homegrown meat, egg and dairy products. It will feature local products like Fiddle Creek Dairy yogurt from HMS alum Tim Sauder, and eggs, grass-fed meats and cage-free eggs from HMS parents and other HMS community members.

Saturday’s auction, beginning at 9:00 a.m., will include items in the outdoor theme such as:

• 19 ft. Bass Boat - This garage-kept, 1987 Astro Pro Craft has a fiberglass hull and 200-hp Mariner engine. Features include Min Kota 50 lb. thrust trolling motor, and Eagle Depth/Fish Finder. It comes with a bunk trailer and custom cover. Interested bidders can contact Jody Fausnight, HMS Director of Advancement at 717-354-7100 to set up a viewing before the sale. It will be sold on Saturday at noon.

• 2-day Sika deer archery hunt in Maryland during the 2016 season - for 2 people including lodging and guide (MD hunting license required)

Buyers can also purchase certificates for experiences & services such as:

• An airplane ride – 30 minutes around Lancaster County for up to 3 people OR Angel Flight ride-along for one (Angel Flights carry a patient and family member to a medical specialist for a surgery or other critical care appointment in the Northeast or mid-Atlantic region.)

• Learn to Ski or Snowboard package from Ski Roundtop

• Hot air balloon ride across Lancaster County

• A family photo session

• Orthodontic services from Dr. Benjamin Chikes, DDS and from Dr. Lewis Storb, DDS

• Paint-your-own-pottery sessions at Peggy & Renee’s Fired Art Studio in Akron

• Tickets to Sight & Sound’s production of Samson

• Golf rounds at local courses, dinner theater and other local entertainment options.

Students contribute to the auction too! Elementary classes prepare baskets with personal touches such as an “On-the-Go Travel Bag” from pre-k students including an activity mat with felt fish made by the students. Middle School students will contribute projects through their clubs, prints from the photography club, miniature gardens/terrariums from the gardening club, a sampling of homemade ice cream flavors from the ice cream club and much more. These class projects will be sold at 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

A festival like HinkleFEST would not be complete without food options to satisfy every taste! Friday kicks off with a pork BBQ dinner from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., available to eat-in or drive-thru take out. The pork BBQ meal includes a roast pork sandwich with picnic side dishes, a drink, and cookie. Hot dog meals are available for smaller appetites. Visitors can enjoy homemade baked goods, ice cream and coffeehouse coffee courtesy of New Holland Coffee Company, owned by HMS alum Sarah Bare, while bidding in the evening auction and previewing Saturday’s auction items. Saturday’s food tent includes famous HMS BBQ chicken, pork BBQ sandwiches, hand-cut French fries, homemade apple dumplings baked fresh on Saturday morning, soft ice cream and specialty coffeehouse drinks.

Hinkletown Mennonite School is located at 272 Wanner Road, one half mile north of Route 322 in Hinkletown and four miles from Ephrata and New Holland.
