Ephrata Area School District has partnered with Junior Achievement for an Ephrata High School STEM Summit recently. Over 320 ninth grade students had the opportunity to interact with approximately 30 STEM professionals to learn about growing career opportunities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields.

According to the United States Bureau of Statistics, in the next five years, STEM jobs are projected to grow twice as quickly as jobs in other fields. District administrators recognize these statistics and want to continue to offer innovative STEM learning opportunities to best prepare students for success after graduation.

“Students today are entering a workforce unrecognizable to their parents, where many of the jobs they will pursue did not exist just ten years ago. Furthermore, the majority of high paying jobs in the future will have some STEM components,” commented Mr. Peter Kishpaugh, Ephrata High School Assistant Principal and STEM Summit Coordinator.

Students spent the STEM Summit day exploring concepts in computer science, chemistry, math, physics, engineering, skilled trades, and more. Sessions included hands-on experiments, friendly competitions and career speakers.

Ephrata High School alumni were contacted to determine if they have professional experience in STEM fields and would like to serve as STEM Summit presenters. The District received an overwhelming response, and many alumni participated who work in STEM fields, including a Four-Star United States Airforce General, Biomedical Research Specialist, Software Manager and more. School administrators also hoped the STEM Summit will inspire students to consider pursuing STEM courses while in high school. “The goal of the Summit is to get students excited about STEM and potentially interested in the course work we offer at Ephrata High School,” concluded Mr. Kishpaugh.
