Travel back in history and experience the “Journey to Bethlehem” held at Woodcrest Retreat during two weekends, Friday and Saturday, December 6 and 7, and Friday, Saturday and Sunday, December 13, 14 and 15. The Woodcrest Retreat staff and 100+ volunteers invite all ages to experience the true story of Christmas and the excitement of Jesus’ birth in a spacious outdoor setting with dramatic actors, a live nativity, and real animals in this unforgettable experience. Arrival time Friday evening is between 5:45 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday’s arrival time is between 5:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
Shown in the photo are (left to right): Andy Brant (wiseman), Curvin Hoover (shepherd), Amber and Gerald Martin (Mary and Joseph).
“Journey to Bethlehem” participants will be welcomed to Woodcrest Retreat with over 300 luminaries lining the entrance and trails. Upon arrival, guests will be directed to the Census Registration area where “taxes” will be collected on those ages 4 and older. Participants will then board a wagon ride and be transported to their first stop on the “Journey to Bethlehem.”
Unique to this event, is that participants will actually become part of the story as they walk with the Biblical characters and receive items to assist them on their “Journey.” In six unique scenes, participants will observe the Angel’s visit with Mary and then join Mary and Joseph on the way to Bethlehem and experience the disappointment of finding no room in the Inn. The “travelers” will then join the shepherds around a warm crackling campfire watching their sheep by night when suddenly angels appear in the sky and proclaim the news of Jesus’ birth! Along with the shepherds, participants will hurry to the stable and experience the quiet wonder of finding Baby Jesus in the manger and while there three wise men arrive to join you in worship of the Savior. The close of the “Journey” will feature a short video clip of Jesus’ life on earth after his birth. A bus will then transport participants back to the parking area.
Please allow 2 hours for the “Journey.” All proceeds will benefit the ministry of Woodcrest Retreat. Groups of 15 and larger may call the office at least 7 days in advance to schedule guaranteed admission. A food concession stand is available.
Since the “Journey” takes place outside, participants will need to dress warmly and wear water resistant shoes or boots. Due to the moderate amount of walking along wooded trails and uneven terrain, unfortunately the “Journey” will not be able to accommodate those who need walking assistance or baby strollers.
Woodcrest Retreat is a nonprofit Christian camp and retreat located at 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata. They can be reached at 717-738-2233.
