Ephrata VFW Issues “Ice Bucket” Challenge

(Shopping News Photo by Donald Reese)

The officers of the Cocalico Valley VFW, the Ladies Auxiliary, and bar staff of the Ephrata VFW participated in the current popular ALS Ice Bucket Challenge recently, as seen on the internet and news broadcasts. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a muscular degenerative disorder that affects the muscle neurons of the body. Eventually it leads to paralysis, vital organ failure and, in some cases, death. The ice bucket challenge helps raise awareness and much needed financial support for research to finding a cure. The Post prides itself in participate in efforts to donate to the community and various worthwhile causes. The current officers and bar staff undertook the challenge of dumping a bucket of ice water on their head at the VFW on 141 South State Street, Ephrata. They also made a donation to the ALS Foundation. They issued the same challenge to the other fine veteran’s organizations in town: the Amvets, the American Legion, and the Elks Lodge. Shown in the photo are (left to right): Dennis Steininger (trustee), Tom O’Donnell (senior vice commander), Alan Armstrong (junior vice commander), Gerald Stauffer (quartermaster) and Dwayne MacKenzie (commander).
