Memory Project Art Is Love In Action

Over 70 talented Garden Spot High School art students participated in the memory project. The Memory Project is a nonprofit organization that invites art teachers and art students to create portraits for kids around the world who have faced substantial challenges, such as neglect, abuse, loss of parents and extreme poverty.

Student artists connect with children from other countries and receive actual photos of the children, and then Garden Spot students create original portrait works of art to be given to these students. Students used a variety of mediums to create these pieces that are cherished by the children experiencing tough times. In addition to the skills the art students gain during the project, they also more importantly gain a chance to connect with other children around the world. Project coordinators video tape the children’s reactions upon receiving their art and a copy is sent to the school for viewing. This special project is a win-win for both recipient and student artist. The project is supported by the Spartan Foundation and overseen by art teacher Toni Myers.

Shown with their art portraits are Georgia Holder (left) and Mary Zelenak (right).
