Hinkletown Mennonite School (HMS) held their annual Servathon recently with every class participating in a service project within the community. Almost 200 students along with teachers and parent volunteers went to eight local organizations to assist with tasks such as visiting and singing with residents, cleaning, gardening, mulching and planting.“I like doing weeding and work like that where you get messy,” said Carson Ropp, grade three, about the service project with Lighthouse Youth Center. “We were helping them because Jesus said to serve others.” Third grade students served at the Lighthouse Youth Center/REAL Life Community Services in Denver. After an introduction to the community services that REAL Life provides, the students helped to clean the building, weed and mulch flowerbeds and pick up trash on the property. “It’s a way of welcoming people–to have a clean building and nice flowers,” third-grader Nicole Martin shared. “If it was dirty and didn’t look nice, [the kids and families] wouldn’t enjoy it as much.”
Other classes are working with Cross Connection Youth Center, Fairmount Homes, Garden Spot Village, Landis Homes, Greenview Bible Camp, Woodcrest Retreat and MCC Material Resource Center.
“This is one way that we carry out HMS’s mission of integrating Christ’s teachings of service and community into the life of the school,” shared Melissa Beidler, HMS parent and Director of Enrollment. “Our students experience service in practical ways and see that value of service in our community modeled in their teachers and parents.”
HMS Servathon also helps to underwrite the operational needs of the school. Weeks before the event, HMS students sought donations from friends, family and neighbors to sponsor them in their service projects and to support the school.
