The “Journey to Bethlehem” is returning again this year at Woodcrest Retreat during two weekends, Friday, December 11, Saturday, December 12 and Friday, December 18, and Saturday, December 19. Now in its fifth season, over 8,500 guests have experienced the true story of Christmas and the excitement of Jesus birth in a spacious outdoor setting with dramatic actors, a live nativity and real animals in this unforgettable journey. Unique to this event, is that participants will actually become part of the story as they walk with the Biblical characters through six outdoor scenes and receive items to assist them on their “Journey.” Arrival time Friday evening is between 6:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. and Saturday’s arrival time is between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
The Woodcrest Retreat staff and 100+ volunteers, invite guests of all ages to experience the sights, sounds, and smells of first century Bethlehem, as they travel back in history. Participants will be welcomed to Woodcrest Retreat with over 300 luminaries lining the entrance and trails. After registering at the Census Registration and paying the “taxes” due on ages four and older, guests will board a wagon ride to be transported to the first stop on the “Journey to Bethlehem.” All “taxes” must be paid by cash or check.
In six unique scenes, participants will observe the Angel’s visit with Mary, travel with Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem, meet a Roman guard and experience the disappointment of not finding room in the Inn. The “travelers” will make a stop at the bustling marketplace with an opportunity to pet some live sheep and goats and observe merchants displaying their wares. Shepherds will guide guests to a warm crackling campfire where they join other shepherds tending their flock of sheep and feel the excitement of angels suddenly appearing in the quiet night sky. Along with the shepherds, participants will hurry to the stable and experience the quiet wonder of finding Baby Jesus in the manger. The “Journey” ends with a short video clip of Jesus’ life on earth after his birth.
Since the “Journey” takes place outside on uneven terrain, unfortunately, it is not suitable for wheelchairs, baby strollers, or those who have difficulty walking. Appropriate warm winter clothes and water resistance shoes should be worn.
The “Journey” will take approximately 60 minutes to complete. Please allow for possible wait time. All proceeds will benefit the ministry of Woodcrest Retreat, which includes a summer camp program for over 1,300 children yearly. Shown, from left to right, are Noelle Warner, Will Warner, Julie Warner, Adam Fox, Curvin Hoover, Julie Burkholder and Anthony Sensing.
Woodcrest Retreat is a nonprofit Christian camp and retreat located at 225 Woodcrest Road, Ephrata. Please call 717-738-2233 for more information.
