Sophomore Sophia Benson spent ten days of her summer at a National Student Leadership Conference at American University in Washington, D.C., where she participated in the law and advocacy program. She had the privilege of meeting lawyers and judges, visiting the Supreme Court and meeting the District Attorney, visiting the Environment Protection Agency, and touring the city at night. As part of a mock trial team, she was assigned to a case as part of the defense team against the prosecution. She described the experience as “intense,” not only because it gave her a glimpse of her future career in family law, but also because it allowed her to see what college might be like. She lived in the dorms with about eighty other students from all over the country.

“It was uncomfortable at first, but it gave me more confidence as a leader,” she said. She hopes to attend again next summer. Sophia is the daughter of Patricia and John Benson of Stevens.
